The Suit, Fight Scenes, and Care Bears? Chris Evans – Captain America: Civil War Interview

If you could be a fly on the wall during this hilarious and laugh-out-loud interview!! Chris Evans shows his lighter side discussing the Captain America suit, and even admits to playing with Care Bears as a child, all while promoting his new film Captain America: Civil War.

Chris Evans interrupts our interview with Paul Bettany to bust his chops about a recent photo shoot he did. There’s an obvious friendship between the two that’s carried on past the wrapping of Civil War. Chris then turns his attention to the 25 women sitting quietly and swooning over the handsome actor. His laugh is infectious and provides and ease to the room as we begin to shoot off questions about his role and the film.

Q: Obviously it looks like there’s a lot of fun on set. Do you guys play pranks?

Chris shares, “It’s not so much pranks as it’s just a camaraderie. You know, certain movies I’ve done [like] comedies where everyone is a little more loose. On these movies there are people who are really there to work and so you don’t want to diminish their experience or disrespect their process. On days when it’s just me and Paul, we’re giggling a lot more.”

Q : How do you feel when you put the uniform back on?

Chris said, “I feel good now, I didn’t in the beginning, it was terrifying. Don’t all our brains just manage to go to the most negative thing possible? Whenever there’s something in front of us, you just focus on what the worst possible outcome could be. Over the course of five or six movies now, it feels great. It really does. The Russo Brothers and Marvel made it such a wonderful environment.” Adding, “it’s like a point of pride when you see the suit, and you’re very honored and humbled that you get to have some sort of a connection to it, because it is bigger than you, you know what I mean. Captain America will live on, there will be other Captain Americas, there will.”

Q : This film is a little darker than the others have been, so how does that feel to transition into a darker role?

Chris welcomed the change, saying, “It was nice. You know, because I think for the most part with Cap, he’s just a selfless guy, he’s not one of these brooding characters where you can kind of as an audience member connect to his conflict and struggle. I think to some degree it can feel vanilla. His goal has always been doing what other people need. And I think in this movie it’s the first time he kind of did what he wants and that’s a little bit of a departure for him. It’s nice because it’s motivated by family. Cap woke up seventy years later and everyone he knows is dead. And you have Bucky this one person who is the remaining chapter of his life before. So you’re pitting his current family with his old family and you can’t ask any man to choose that.” Adding, ” It’s the first time he’s really kind of said I’m choosing me. Over you. And it’s tough for him but I like that.”

Q : What was the hardest scene to shoot?

Chris talks about the helicopter scene and how his arm still doesn’t feel the same since. Mentioning, “it’s a fake helicopter, obviously and we did the first couple things, and you’re holding the helicopter [then they] drift the helicopter, it’s on a rig, and they move it. I really did bang something up.”

As for tough scenes with a particular actor, he explains, “it was harder doing scenes with Downey, because he’s such a force. There’s a limited amount of scenes where it’s really just us, when we’re not fighting, just us talking. It’s the framework for the conflict. If you don’t invest in those moments, the conflict is going to be sour and fall flat. So those few scenes where it’s just him and I were really intimidating to match him.”

Q : We’ve seen the fight scenes. Is there anyone you think would be a good face off for Captain America who’s on Team Cap?

Chris answers, “Scarlet Witch would be trouble. You know what I mean? She messes stuff up. She would be a problem.We’re lucky we have her.”

As for the friendship between he and Bucky interfering with new friendships, like Falcon, Chris shares that he’s glad he doesn’t have to make the decision. Marvel will do it for him, and what a tough decision they have. Adding, “Bucky is the friend from old. And Falcon is the friend from today. They’re both great people, both great characters, and great actors. So, you know, I’m thankful it’s not my decision.”

Q : Growing up who was your favorite superhero?

Chris shares, “Oh I didn’t have one. I had an older sister and I think anyone who has siblings [understands]. Whatever Carly wanted to do, we did. So we [played] My Little Pony and Care Bears…that was it. Just being in Carly’s room was a big deal! You’re like don’t mess it up, just sit here and whatever she gives us to play with, that’s what we’re playing with. And she’d give us the fuzzy My Little Ponies that gave me the willies, not the plastic ones.” Adding, “so comic books were not on my radar. I liked Star Wars, which was maybe the coolest thing about me, but that was my dad being like please! Please like Han Solo and I was like, but Tender Heart Bear. It’s really sad.”

Chris Evans had us cracking up from beginning to end with this interview. It was truly an unforgettable moment, that’s for sure!
