Looking for a fun project to do for a girl’s night in celebration? This DIY Alcohol Ink Coasters project is it! I recently joined some friends for a girl’s night where we made this adorable and easy craft to bring home. It was a huge hit!
Below I’ve included a free alcohol ink painting printable for your art night.
DIY Alcohol Ink Dyed Coasters
How to Make DIY Alcohol Ink Coasters
These alcohol ink coasters can be used for many different ideas from wall art to mother’s day gifts – just tie four coasters with a burlap ribbon and voila! You can even sell these on Etsy!
In my case, I decided to create coasters to be used for wall art. I found the corkboard at Target in the desk organization section and plan to attach the coasters to that using heavy-duty glue.
Materials you need for alcohol ink art:
- White Ceramic Tiles
- alcohol ink
- rubbing alcohol
- small cup
- paintbrush
- newspaper (to cover table)
- felt pads (for the coaster bottoms)
- clear acrylic coating spray

Instructions (Don’t worry there’s a free printable template below)
- Begin by pouring a few tablespoons of alcohol into a small cup. Using a paintbrush generously coat the tile with alcohol. Make sure the entire tile surface is covered in alcohol.
- Once you have coated your tile surface, begin dripping ink one spot at a time to your tiles. You will see with each drop the ink will make different creations and designs. Let the inkblot sit for a few seconds before trying another color. Cover your entire tile with ink drips. *Try dripping paint from different heights
- For extra effect use the same paintbrush used for coating the tile with alcohol and re-dip it in the alcohol, then flick it onto your creation. You can do this as little as often as you’d like. Each creation will be a one-of-a-kind piece!
- Let your tile dry for at least 30 minutes then using a paintbrush paint the outer edges of the tiles a solid color to hide any ink that dripped over the edge. It also gives it a polished look.
- Finally, take your tiles outside and spray each one with a generous coating of clear acrylic spray. Note – do not spray them any closer than 8-10 inches.
- The felt pads are optional and can be placed on the tile before or after the craft.
From beginning to end these handmade coasters take approximately 4 hours to complete. (Most of that is drying time) They are a great, fun, creative art project to do for girls’ night, baby shower, and other events.
My favorite part is how easy this project is to do. If you plan to do a group craft have everyone bring a small box to take their tiles home in and let dry completely.
Colors used for my creation above are Adirondack alcohol inks: mermaid, citrus, eggplant, and meadow.

So I have done these and they are super easy and fun but my dilemma is trying to cover all the white spots and then my colors are muddy and yucky. Would you leave some white spots?
Jennifer says
I recommend complimentary colors and also spacing out the drying time between droplets to see if that helps. I didn’t find that problem, so it may be the color choices. I hope this helps! 🙂

Peggy Nunn says
I think these are so pretty. I want to make some.
Erika says
Just wondering, the alcohol ink doesn’t bead up or just run off the glossy surface of the tile? It actually absorbs thru the tile’s glossy finish?
Jennifer says
No, a little goes a long way. So drop only a few of each color and you’ll begin to see the art unfold. Remember, to generously paint the tile with rubbing alcohol first which helps absorb the inks. It will dry on its own. 🙂
Too small Mouse says
Looks good, I like it.

These are so cool! I wondered what type of paint did you use for the side, or did you use the ink? I have seen these before but painting the sides like you did absolutely gives them a finished look. Love them.

Hi! This is amazing! 😀 Just wondering how it fares after being used as a coaster. Will it stain mugs or have coffee stains after use? How’s the color over time when it’s used with hot/cold cups/mugs? 🙂
Jennifer says
Thanks!! 🙂 Would you believe I use it for wall art? LOL! I’ve never put a glass on it. However, if you use the acrylic coating spray you should be good.
