Summer is here and that means there’s a lot of fun in store! I thought what better way to kick off summer than with some fun crafts that will keep the kids entertained (hopefully) all summer long! This was our first attempt at crafting a no sew DIY Puppet Show Theater and puppets too! Using craft products we found mainly around the house, like a big cardboard box, markers and designer tape, we made a fun puppet theater for the kids!
Here’s what you need to make your own no sew DIY puppet theater

- A large box
- Box cutter
- Markers
- Variety of cardstock paper
- Scissors
- Designer Tape
- Craft Glue
- Pencil
Directions:
Using a box cutter, make a large window for the puppet theater. Also cut out the back of the box so children can easily get in and out of the theater. Next, begin designing the theater using a variety of cardstock paper and markers. I used a pencil to draw triangles on the cardstock for the banner under the window, then used craft glue to adhere each piece to the box. Using larger cardstock paper, cut out two curtains for the window. I attached a second smaller piece below to show depth in the curtains. I then cut out a thin strip of cardstock and glued that to the middle of each curtain to appear like a ribbon. Using designer tape, attach the curtains to the box along the sides and top of the window. Finally, use markers for the puppet show lettering.
When I asked the boys what theme they would like for the puppet show, they immediately said “animals!” So we headed to Walmart to pick up paper bags and cans, along with summer time favorite snacks to use in our craft project.
DIY Puppet Animals
What you’ll need:
- Paper bags
- Cans
- Markers
- Scissors
- Cardstock paper
- and a variety of craft supplies like pipe cleaner, felt, buttons, glue, etc
I found paper bag printables, like the dog, bird and hippo, and sea turtle online. The boys had such a blast coloring and crafting their animal puppets for the show!
We also made an evil can puppet they named Dr. Doom, who had wild hair made from pipe cleaner, and candy pieces for the eyes and nose. I loved seeing their creativity shine in their artwork, then play out during their puppet show.
They couldn’t wait for daddy to get home and perform their show! I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot more performances throughout the summer too. 🙂
I’d love to hear what you have in store for summer! Will you be making any DIY crafts like we did?
