Pizzelle may be something you’ve never heard of before now. These thin Italian cookies look like waffles but are crispy like crackers. When I spotted them in my local World Market store I wasn’t sure what to do with them, but knew I wanted to try them. My dad’s side of the family originated from Sicily and grew up in New York, so I had a feeling these would bring some nostalgia to the dinner table.
By the way, pizzelles can be eaten on their own, but I thought I’d do a fun twist by making them into ice cream sandwiches. Then I added Nutella to the mix….holy yumminess batman!
Okay, so here’s what you need to pull off this incredibly easy and delicious dessert recipe.
Nutella Ice Cream Sandwich Pizzelles:
Ingredients
- Pizzelles
- Nutella
- Vanilla Ice Cream
- Mini chocolate chips
Directions
Gently scoop ice cream onto the pizzelle. This works best if ice cream is left to soften, as cookies are very delicate. On another pizzelle, spread a generous portion of Nutella. Take the Nutella pizzelle and flip it on top of the ice cream. Very, very carefully push down on the (center) top cookie until the ice cream reaches the edge of the Italian cookie. Have your mini chocolate chips spread out on a cutting board for a quick roll, then place them on a baking sheet already in the freezer. We are working with ice cream here, so you want to be pretty quick. The ice cream sandwiches will harden within 15-20 minutes in the freezer. Then you and your guests are ready to dig in! If you have leftovers, which will be highly unlikely 😉 wrap each pizzelle individually and keep frozen until ready.
I know you’re probably wondering, where do I find pizzelles at? If you don’t have a World Market near you, you can order it online or find them at Whole Foods too! Also, if you have an Italian bakery in your town, they will definitely have some on hand, or you can find recipes online to make them from scratch.
The whole family is begging me to make them again. Yes, they are THAT good. As expected, my dad remembered trying pizzelles as a kid, and even shared a few fond memories from his childhood.
Enjoy!

I have never tried these, but I certainly will be trying it! I may have to break my diet for this, but I’m sure it will be so worth it!

I’ve been enjoying Pizzelles since I was a kid. My grandmother used to make them and even gave me her Pizzelle iron when I got older. She made them the traditional way with Anise Seed but holy cow…Nutella and Ice Cream? She would have love it. Thanks for the reminder of my lovely grandmother. I’ll have to make these and think of her while I enjoy them. She had a sweet tooth so she would have loved these.

This sounds amazing. It has to be somewhat healthy because it’s made with Nutella! 🙂
