Our 5-year-old has the opportunity to select a new app each week for the iPad. Based on his behavior chart, and how many stars he gains during the week, he has the option of selecting a free app or paid one. When the Curious George’s Town for iPad app released I knew this would be a great app for the boys. We always try to encourage selecting quality apps that offer an educational benefit to them.
Curious George’s Town teaches kids to save. Your child earns money by going to the different areas in the town. They can go to the fountain to help find someone’s lost pet, the pet store to feed the animals, the library to put books away, the market to find food, the bakery to decorate cakes, and the park to clean up so George can play.
All along they make money to buy certain add-ons for their town. They can buy farms, dinosaurs, helicopters, and so much more!
The app is for children who are in pre-K to Kindergarten and does a nice job on teaching letter recognition and counting single digit numbers.
The thing I really like about the app is that it has a reward system that parents can use with their children. Parents can type in a code in the parent section and set up a rewards chart for their child. For example, if your child has chores, you can plug those chores into the chart, and if they do their chores you can reward them with coins from the game. Not only will this motivate them to do their chores, but it will help them to purchase items for their town. It is a win win!
Being a teacher I like apps that focus on fun and education, and Curious George’s Town does just that. The app is compatible with iPhone 4, 4S, and 5, iPod, and iPad/iPad mini. Download the app here.
