Are you excited for Captain America: Civil War? We had the best time in LA a few weeks ago interviewing some of the cast. Speaking of, did you catch this interview with Chris Evans? If not, check it out!
We were lucky enough to meet with both Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) to talk about their roles in the new film.
I was invited as media to cover this press event. All opinions are my own.
Captain America: Civil War Jeremy Renner & Elizabeth Olsen Interviews
On the table we set out several of the film’s newest toys, which the two quickly noticed. Jeremy Renner jokes about one of his figures having “boy band facial hair”, while Elizabeth Olsen shares that a friend of hers snapped pictures of a Scarlet Witch toy at a Lego Store recently.
When asked about their stunts in the new film, Elizabeth shares, “I think we do as many stunts as we can, and a lot of times they take a second crew out, or film things when we’ve wrapped for the movie. When they’re in Germany they might do stuff then. But, when we’re there, we do everything.”
Jeremy added, “There’s one flip or something that I couldn’t do, so my stunt double did….he’s a badass.”
Q: What inspired you to do the role of the Scarlet Witch?
Elizabeth mentioned, “A few things. I was already a fan of Ironman and Avengers. I remember I saw it with my dad when I working in Servia; it was about the second time seeing it, and I loved it.” She also mentioned that her older brother loves comics and knows everything about them and recommended she take a look at some of the comics to learn about her. Adding, “I started reading more about her journey and I found the fact that her mind is the only thing that limits her…this kind of insanity and being able to manipulate reality [all of] those kinds of things to me were really cool.”
Q: Did you need extra training for your bow? Do you bow hunt?
Jeremy shares that there wasn’t any extra training for this film, but noticed the quiver is different. Adding, “Sometimes they could snap out and put a different tip on the bottom. This movie I really do a full extension. So it’s the same gear-different tips.”
At the point of our interview neither of them had scene the film yet, but discussed most likely seeing it during the London or New York premiere.
Q: So there is a lot of action and a lot of humor in the movie. Did you guys have improv, or was that just something they wrote in?
Jeremy said, “The Russo brothers were great. They’d always have alternate lines for certain things and these sort of one-liners, and then they just let you kind of run with a bunch of different things. They just wanna have options for tone. That was probably the funnest part of the job was improvising, that was fun.”
When asked about behind the scenes info, like if there’s any real life tension between actors on set, both quickly answered no. Elizabeth added, “There’s a lot of jokes and a lot of inappropriate humor.” They also spoke about Paul Bettany, who plays Vision, and his suit. Adding that even though he was sweating though his prosthetics and was miserable – he was still one of the funniest people on set. They both added that they’re excited to keep going with the filming, and Jeremy joked, “until they kill us off.”
Elizabeth spoke about her dancing background and how her role as Scarlet Witch is sort of like choreography. Adding, “I got to meet with someone who’s actually a very talented dancer and choreography, and she and I have become good friends.” Mentioning that she would help with certain moves and give her recommendations on movements.
Q: How would you feel if they came out with just a Hawkeye film?
Jeremy said, “That’s above my paygrade. For me, I suppose there’s a lot to explore, to go back a bit and understand how or why and what. There’s just has to be a reason to do it. But yeah I love the character.”
We also asked Jeremy if he ever had a role he turned down and regretted later. Jeremy answered, “never. I’m always happy with what decisions I make, so yeah no regrets, ever…with anything in life- even when I make a mistake.
It was time for lunch so we ended our interview, but enjoyed getting to know them a bit. Just before heading out they took a group picture with us.
Look for Captain America: Civil War in theaters May 6th!
