The Nutcracker and the Four Realms follows the story of young Clara who’s just lost her mother and finds herself in an alternate world. We sat down with actress Mackenzie Foy for an interview on her role as Clara in Disney’s Nutcracker film. Here’s what she had to say about the film, costumes, and her favorite realm in this exclusive Mackenzie Foy Interview.
I was invited as media to cover this event. All opinions are my own.
Exclusive Mackenzie Foy Interview
Prior to attending The Nutcracker and the Four Realms Premiere and pre-party, we had the opportunity to chat with Mackenzie about her role in the film.
Q: How does it feel to be a classical holiday character now?
Mackenzie shares with us, “It’s really fun. What’s beautiful about the Nutcracker is that it’s such a beloved story and it’s really fun to be able to play a character that so many people all over the world can relate to and have kinda like this childhood connection from seeing the ballet when they were young.”
The costume designer did an impeccable job on the film’s pieces. We asked Mackenzie what her favorite costume was and she mentioned, “I wear quite a few costumes in the film which was really fun. They were all handmade-all very intricate, which is really amazing. I really love the purple party dress because that one has a bustle- and it’s really fun.” Adding, “there’s a lot of detail that went into the costume design, from the tights to the shoes, to the many skirt layers, and the bodices, and the corset. They have a different character to them, and kind of go with Clara’s evolution, which I really like.”
On playing the role of Clara, Mackenzie shared, “every character, no matter how big or small has its own challenges because they’re all unique. You have to do the research in order to properly create them. But I would say with Clara, and her being the main role, it follows my character, so I have to make sure that everything is in line. I have to make sure the past is in my head, and I know where she’s going and the emotional complexity of those things.”
Q: What was your favorite realm?
“It’s everchanging, [laughs]. Right now I really love the Land of Snowflakes just because it’s blue and shiny, and very sparkly.” She added that it’s still pretty hot in California, and she’s dying for some winter weather so she’s dreaming about that realm in particular.
Q: What advice do you have for young girls that look up to you and wanna follow in your footsteps?
Mackenzie said, “I hope they see that Clara is unapologetically herself-that even though she’s this young inventor in her time period, it wasn’t really you know, socially acceptable, but she still ‘this is who I am. This is what I love to do, and I’m gonna do it.’ And I hope they see that and know they can do that. You can be interested in science, you can be in interested in mechanics, and you can still wear dresses and like
those kinds of things.”
About Disney’s Nutcracker:
All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.
