Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of my favorite Marvel movies. With the film releasing to DVD and the fall season quickly approaching, I decided to celebrate one of my favorite Avengers by creating these Captain America Candy Apples. I’m sharing the simple step-by-step instructions for you below so you can make your own – whether it’s for an Avengers movie marathon, Captain America themed party, or just for fun!

M&M’S® were the perfect topping choice for replicating Cap’s weapon of choice. Plus #HeroesEatMMs. 😉 Walmart had a large variety of M&M’s so I purchased both the minis and dark chocolate varieties, along with the other ingredients needed for our caramel apples.
How to Make Captain America Shield Candy Apples:
Begin by prepping the apples. Crisp apples that are not waxed work best. I used two varieties; smaller apples for the kids, and larger ones for adults. If you have waxed apples use a bit of baking soda to clean them, or a quick dip in hot water to remove the wax. Dry the apples and remove the entire stem. Next, poke the stick into the stem end of the apple. Place a sheet of parchment paper on a baking pan and then place them in the refrigerator. Cooling the apple will help the caramel stick better.
Prep the ingredients. First heat the caramel bits as directed on the bag. I chose the quickest method by heating them in the microwave.
Pour the M&M’s into a bowl. You can pick out the colors you need: red and blue if you prefer.
Dip the apples in caramel. Lift the apple out of the caramel and let the excess drip off. You can use a spoon to help remove excess caramel off the bottom. Caramel with continue to drip once placed on the parchment paper so try to get as much off as possible.
Next add the toppings. In this case we will not be rolling the caramel apples into the M&M’s, instead we will be placing them on individually. I began with the blue M&M’s by creating a circle around the top of the apple, then filling in most of the circle with more blue M&M’s, leaving space for the star in the center of the shield.
I added a double layer of mini red M&M’s, then left space for the white chocolate (next step) and repeated a double layer of mini M&M’s again for the final layer. When I attempted to use the larger M&M’s I found they were too heavy and would slide down. I definitely recommend sticking with the minis. Next, I placed the apples back in the fridge for 30 minutes before adding the melted chocolate.
Heat the white chocolate. Again, follow the directions on the packaging. I opted for the easiest heating choice; melting in the microwave. Using a spoon, or funnel if you have one on hand, put the white chocolate into a plastic squeeze bottle. I found the plastic bottle near the wedding aisle at Walmart. Using a mason jar or something similar, fill it half way with hot water and place the plastic bottle inside to keep the chocolate warm.
Decorate the candy apples with the melted white chocolate. Start squeezing the melted chocolate from the center of the apple and work outward, creating a star shape, like in the center of the Captain America Shield.
I drizzled the layer in between the double row of red mini M&M’s with white chocolate as well.
The boys were very excited to see how the Captain America Shield Candy Apples turned out, and couldn’t wait to taste them! Since my little guy is missing his two front teeth I made eating his apple a bit easier by slicing it. Surprisingly most of the toppings remained on the apple when sliced with an apple cutter. The apples were stored in the fridge for 2 hours prior to slicing. While snacking on our special treat we watched Captain America: The Winter Soldier as a family. But these Captain America candy apples work perfectly for any Marvel movie night!

Storing your caramel candy apples. You have the option of storing the apples on the baking sheet in the fridge for a few days or wrap each apple individually with cellophane bags. If you go the bagged route (which is great for gifting) don’t store them in the fridge. They can remain sealed at room temperature for a few days without spoiling.
Have you ever made candy apples before? What toppings would you select?
