I have to admit…I’ve never seen the Mean Girls movie. Back in 2004, I had no desire to see a film about mean girls. However, I’ve heard great things about the Mean Girls Musical and decided to give it a chance, after all, I do love the theater! With zero expectations or history of the original film’s premise, I went in blindly – and to my surprise it was fantastic!
I was invited as media to cover this event. All opinions are my own.
Mean Girls Musical Tour
Direct from Broadway, Mean Girls is the hilarious hit musical show from an award-winning creative team, including book writer Tina Fey (30 Rock), composer Jeff Richmond (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), lyricist Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde) and director Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon).
About Mean Girls Tour:
Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. Soon, this naïve newbie falls prey to a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung.
Mean Girls Musical Review
Wowwwwww! I was blown away by the incredible talent in Mean Girls. Not only can these ladies act, but they can sing their butts off! I want to own the soundtrack, seriously.
The friend I took along with me was thrilled with the musical as well. She pointed out that while she wasn’t a fan of Damian’s character in the film, Eric Huffman, who plays Damian in the broadway musical, brings his charisma to life. We were also seated next to another friend of mine and her high school daughter who was a super fan of all things Mean Girls, and by the end of the performance, she was crying. She adored it that much.
While I don’t recommend Mean Girls Musical to children under high school age, due to a range of topics including bullying, swearing, and drugs, I will say it has a powerful message for young adults. It’s also full of hilarious laugh out loud moments and many relatable ones too. I can’t say this enough – the music is fantastic! If you’re a broadway fan you will not want to miss this one.
So if you’re like me and have not seen the Mean Girls film – don’t let that stop you from going! I am certain you will be pleasantly surprised, just as I was!
