This summer’s blockbuster hit, “Finding Dory“, swims home on Blu-ray, DVD, and On-Demand November 15th! In preparation of the release, I met with Disney’s own Master Pumpkin Carver, Joseph Yakovetic. Believe it or not, that pumpkin below is mine. I don’t see myself as a natural artist, but with Joseph’s guiding voice, I was able to pull-off this fun Finding Dory Pumpkin. Want to make one of your own? Just follow these easy steps below!
How to paint a Finding Dory Pumpkin
I was invited as media to cover this event. All opinions are my own.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Baby Wipes
Finding Dory printable
Pen or Pencil
Transfer Paper
Sharpie
2-4 push pins
Blue, Yellow and Magenta paint colors
Begin by using a baby wipe to clean off your pumpkin’s surface. This will allow the design to adhere better to the pumpkin. Then, place the Finding Dory printable on top of the transfer paper and using 2-4 push pins attach it to the pumpkin – making sure the darker side of the transfer paper is touching the pumpkin.
Then, very lightly trace over Dory with a pencil or pen. Joseph urged us not to push too hard or the transfer paper would tear as we were tracing.
Once you’ve traced the entire design, remove the printable and transfer paper to see your outline. Next, with a sharpie, trace over the entire design, filling in certain spots with the marker, as pictured below. Using another baby wipe, clean off the pumpkin removing any overdue residue from the transfer paper. Don’t worry – the sharpie outline will stay intact!
Now it’s time to paint. Begin by painting Dory’s fins and tail yellow, followed by her eyes and tongue in magenta, and finally the rest of her in blue (except her teeth and eyes).
Voila! You have a really awesome Finding Dory Pumpkin! Personally, I think painting a pumpkin is way easier than carving. And it’s less messy too! No pumpkin guts – just paint.
A small amount of my paint chipped off during the shipment from LA to my home in Fl, but overall I’m really happy with the design. Both boys thought mommy rocked a cool pumpkin design too. 🙂
I also brought home this adorable Hank plush to join Dory and Nemo.
