It’s week four of our #MotivationMonday series. Today’s topic of discussion is the powerful lesson we learn from our mistakes. It’s a given that every single one of us will make a mistake in our lifetime. We don’t always know we’re making a mistake until it’s too late, but it’s really about what we do afterwards that makes the difference.
Motivation Monday #4 – What We Learn From Our Mistakes
Mistakes are human nature. It’s simply a misunderstanding, miscalculation, miscommunication of what was expected. However, mistakes are needed to push and motivate our thinking. These challenges provide a better outcome for us. It may not feel like it in the moment, but once we’re on the other side of our mistake, we will see things a whole lot differently. As they say, hindsight is 20/20.
Working through our mistakes:
We all have this internal sense of being right, but is that really possible? Think about that for a moment. Could every single person be right at the same time? No – which means, many, many people are bound to be wrong at any given moment.
The image I used above has defects, but does that mean it should be discarded? Not necessarily. It could look like new again by sanding it down and getting a fresh coat of paint – because what’s underneath is quality, and deserves a second chance. The same can be said for an idea that encountered many mistakes, but in the end proved to be worth the journey.
Oftentimes we can get “stuck” and have trouble finding our way out of a mistake. What we need to do is come up with another idea. If that doesn’t work, try something else. We succeed by learning from our mistakes.
Many people failed before they were successful. Take Walt Disney for example. He was fired because his editor thought he lacked imagination. He took that failure and turned it into one of the largest and most successful companies to date. Can you imagine a world without Disney World or Disney films? I certainly can not!
Only Good Vibes
Mistakes are going to be made, but it’s how we respond to them that makes all the difference. Today’s motivational thought is about learning, growing, and changing. How can you learn from your mistakes? What can you do differently to change your path in life? Don’t beat yourself up – use it as inspiration to try something different. The internet offers a plethora of free ideas, just make a google search! Maybe all you need is a fresh perspective on an idea to get your wheels turning.

I think it is important to instill this in kids as they grow up. If kids are made to feel they can’t make a mistake, it can carry over to adult relationships, work, and anything else. It seems people who are confident enough to feel it is OK to admit a mistake are much more successful.

Very nicely written. I heard this saying,”life can be understood by looking back but it must be lived by looking ahead” ! Even with mistakes, we have to let go of them and move ahead! 🙂
