I received a very early screening invitation to see Mary Poppins Returns. I was giddy with excitement as this is one of my favorite Disney films growing up. Mary Poppins Returns Review
“Disney’s MARY POPPINS RETURNS, an all-new original musical and sequel, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss. Emily Blunt stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and Lin-Manuel Miranda plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London.”
Nominated for four Golden Globes, Disney brings a timeless classic anew with a fresh storyline, music, and characters. Michael and his sister Jane Banks are all grown up and the family is dealing with the aftermath of Michael’s wife’s passing. When debt collectors come knocking on their door, Michael is overwhelmed with fear of losing their childhood home. The Banks kids need help, and who better to re-enter their lives than Mary Poppins!
While Mary Poppins Returns does touch on some sad life moments, the overall feel of the film is light, fun, and believable. Not to mention the film is stunningly beautiful! Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda embody their characters to perfection. It really is practically perfect in every way.
The one stand-out I want to mention is this is a musical, but not a remake of the original, therefore you will not find your classic favorites like “A Spoonful of Sugar” or that long-winded “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” song. However, the film is full of beautiful new songs and scores that keep with the feel of what you know and appreciate from the original. I do wish at one point there was at least the smallest hum of an original tune, but I totally understand wanting to make it clear that this film is a sequel, and therefore stands on its own.
There is also more than one surprise appearance in the film – so no bathroom breaks! 😉

I loved the original as a kid. Plus, Dick Van Dyke, from the original, is one of my favorite actors, and I hear he makes an appearance in the new one.
