Marvel’s latest film debuts in theaters Friday, September 3rd! I’ll admit, I’m not familiar with this particular storyline even though we are huge Marvel fans, but that allowed us to enjoy the film without expectations which is nice sometimes. I was especially excited to get an early screening of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings this week so the boys and I could share our thoughts with all of you!
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Movie Review
About the film: Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings” stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.
Shang-Chi Movie Review
One of the first things I want to mention is how beautiful this film is! From the rich cultural history to the incredible digital effects Shang-Chi and its story are quite mesmerizing to watch. It’s a welcomed addition to the Marvel films that broaden the superhero representation on screen.
The film begins with Shang-Chi aka Shaun living in San Francisco far away from his childhood home. The storyline offers plenty of backstory to help viewers familiarize themselves with the comics too.
The tranquil beginning quickly turns into an incredible heart-pumping fight scene that sets the tone for the remainder of the film. I haven’t seen fighting like this since Jackie Chan in his glory days! The casting of Awkwafina as Shaun’s best friend was perfect. She does a wonderful job adding humor at just the right time to give everyone a break from the intensity of the film.
As the story unfolds we learn that Shaun, his sister, and his father are all estranged, but they are forced to reunite in their hometown of Macao. The siblings quickly drop their issues with one another to join forces against their father who has turned their homeland into a fight training center and has set his attention on destroying their mother’s hidden village. I won’t give away much more as I prefer not to share movie spoilers.
There are a few familiar faces from past Marvel films that make cameos in Shang-Chi like Wong from Doctor Strange. I will mention that this film is PG-13 and for a good reason. There are a few curse words, as well as some scary characters, in particular, the dragons that might be scary for younger ones.
Overall, the boys and I really loved this film. The fight scenes are more like an artful dance of sorts and are simply incredible to watch! I definitely recommend getting your tickets now to see Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. I’m certain you and your family will love it!
