My grandmother’s laugh was infectious. It was a big ole’ belly laugh…and you couldn’t help but join in when you heard it. Grandma also had one of the most unique singing voices. You definitely knew it was her on the other end of the line. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer in the 90’s, I was too young to really understand the concept or severity of the disease. As I grew older, I realized just how strong my grandmother was to beat breast cancer and live to tell about it. The Susan G. Komen Foundation became my first great cause because of her.
This is a partnered post. All opinions are my own.
Why the Susan G. Komen Foundation Matters To Me
Pink is more than just a color; it represents the impact that each person is making in the fight against breast cancer. This impact makes you More Than Pink®
Boy, was grandma a stunner too! Just look at her above. Poised and camera ready.
After beating breast cancer her joy became my fight to help others. When a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago – my heart broke for her and her family. She was in her mid 30’s and was in the fight for her life. She was so young. I thought – this could be me right now….someone has to help her! I rallied a group of girls from near and far to help with donations for gift cards and planned a meal schedule for a few months while she went through treatment. I wanted to help relieve any stress or concerns she had about taking care of her family. I know how us moms feel when we’re sick and can’t take care of the house chores for a few days, but this fight of hers was going to be much longer than a few days.
I’m happy to say both stories have a happy ending. Not only did my grandmother survive, but so did my friend. I am so grateful for the advances in medicine that have allowed these women in my life, along with many more survivors to keep on living!
Although my grandmother’s health declined a few years ago and she is no longer with us, she is very much still a part of my heart. I often think about her and can hear that great big laugh of hers. She called me her sugar plum sweetie pie princess. Yep, all of those names belong to me. 🙂
Make This Fight Your Fight
Susan G. Komen®’s mission is to save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.
Valpak has joined the community of bold companies that share in the vision of Susan G. Komen for a world without breast cancer. To amplify awareness around this common vision, Valpak will turn its Blue Envelope pink this October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month while also working to raise local awareness within the communities that they serve and funds in support of the fight to end breast cancer.
More about the Pink Envelope
Valpak’s pink envelope will highlight celebrity chef Sandra Lee, a breast cancer survivor, and advocate for women’s health, as a “More Than Pink® Hero.”
Nominate a hero who has taken action in the fight against breast cancer! Throughout the month of October, Valpak will share the submitted stories and ultimately 25 lucky winners will each receive a set of pink KitchenAid appliances (valued at over $800!) in support of Cook for the Cure®. The nationwide October Valpak envelope will also feature a special surprise for 500 lucky recipients, who will instantly win an immersion blender courtesy of KitchenAid by looking through their pink Valpak envelopes and finding a die-cut certificate shaped like an immersion blender.
