This girl can saaaaaang! We had the opportunity to watch Tina – The Tina Turner Musical on opening night at the Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando. Zurin Villanueva does an outstanding job as Tina Turner – wow what a performance!
I was invited as media to cover this event. All opinions are my own.
Tina – The Tina Turner Musical Review
About the show:
HER VOICE IS UNDENIABLE. HER FIRE IS UNSTOPPABLE. HER TRIUMPH IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER.
An uplifting comeback story like no other, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical is the inspiring journey of a woman who broke barriers and became the Queen of Rock n’ Roll. One of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, Tina Turner has won 12 Grammy Awards and her live shows have been seen by millions, with more concert tickets sold than any solo performer in music history. Featuring her much-loved songs, Tina – The Tina Turner Musical is written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Katori Hall and directed by the internationally acclaimed Phyllida Lloyd.
My review:
This show is not only a broadway performance but a seriously good concert! The music and performances are outstanding. I loved that they incorporated local musicians like the saxophone, guitar, and keyboard players into the show.
Warning: this show is not for young children. If you have followed Tina’s career then you are aware of her tumultuous relationship with Ike Turner. The show is 2 hours and 45 minutes with the first half focused on Tina’s childhood (including an abusive father and mother who abandons her) followed by her abusive relationship with Ike. There is a lot of swearing, some drug use, and physical abuse which may be triggering for some.
The emotional storyline is overlayed with Tina’s hit songs including “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” “We Don’t Need Another Hero,” and “Let’s Stay Together.” As I mentioned from the top, Zurin does a phenomenal job belting out Tina’s musical numbers. You will also be surprised by the two young actresses who play Anna Mae (aka Tina Turner) who also do a fantastic job in their roles. This cast really brings it! The music is high energy throughout. If you are a Tina Turner fan – you will learn a lot about her life, and enjoy this musical performance.
See Tina – The Tina Turner Musical now at Dr. Phillips Center through January 15th, 2023 (or see when it’s coming to a broadway theater near you!)
