My husband and I have gone round and round about this topic for months. Our older son clearly shows signs of being advanced academically and although he was to begin Kindergarten this school year, Nate wanted to test him for advancement. My opposition is due to concern that we would make the wrong choice for our son and that the pressure would be too much for him. After long discussions I ultimately agreed to “just have him tested”, but I knew….I just knew he would pass.
Our little guy has been excited for weeks about taking the test. Is he a weird kid or what? LOL! He kept reassuring me, ” I’m gonna win the test Mommy.” Well, the day finally arrived today (Wednesday) and the 1 1/2 hour-long IQ test followed by a Kindergarten end of the year assessment showed that he more than qualified to advance into first grade. He scored 1st grade level in Math and 2.9 in reading, which is high level 2nd grade. He’s 5! He does need some work on sentence structure, however we’re confident he’ll pick that up quickly. So…..J is excited to announce that he will begin 1st grade on Monday!

Congratulations to your son on his achievement… and congrats to you for taking the time to make a thoughtful decision about your son’s future. It sounds to me like your instincts say he is ready… and if he struggles in some areas, it seems to me that you will be there to help him out. I always say that any child can succeed in any school if they have involved parents.

Wanted to give him a BIG Hug, from a very proud Grandma Sherry!!! The GOOD NEWS is you will know if it is too much for him and he can always go to Kindergarten with the kids his age if it does not work out! So why not try this, especially if he is excited about it! Way to go Jacob, have a fun and exciting year in First Grade!! Grandma Loves you!!!

What an exciting time. What’s even better to hear, is that HE is excited about it. I’m glad you and your hubby decided to support him in this. I know most schools keep an eye on advanced children to make sure their growth is proper in whatever level they are in both academically and socially. Sounds like this was a right fit at this time. Happy 1st grade year little guy!

Thanx Tiffany!

Outstanding…Congratulations! That is just terrific! I would like to do that with one of my grandchildren. He was even thought to have Aspergers because of him being advanced and some kids have a hard time relating to him because of his vocabulary. Not sure how he would do because he is into things like science and history basically but he does catch on quickly to everything. His reading is excellent as well and he picked that up in pre-k and they were amazed. Interesting and he has to be so excited.
Jennifer H says
Thanx Sandy! I know they have magnet schools that cater to certain subjects like math or science, possibly that would be something to consider with your grandson?

I started my son in school too young. He was very smart and tested out at a genius IQ, but he was not ready socially nor was he mature enough. His birthday in mid-November, and he started K when he was 4. Hindsight showed me I should have waited until the next year when he was 5, going on 6. It would have saved me a lot of trouble in school. My daughter also tested in a high IQ range and was placed in classed for gifted children. They wanted her to skip from 1st grade to 3rd grade but I said no, because even though she was very smart and ahead of all the other children academically, she was not mature enough or socially ready to go up that far. She wound up with a full four year academic scholarship to the college of her choice when she graduated high school. Don’t push your son, let him grow socially as well as academically. I know you are proud of him.
Jennifer H says
Thank you Karen for your feedback and for sharing your story. I would definitely not care to advance him anymore, but I do think he’s socially ready for 1st. He gravitates towards older children any time we’re out. We will see what this year throws at us! Hopefully all will go well.
